The Nubian Divas…by Faydora

The Nubian DivasI had the pleasure of meeting the Nubian Divas in May 2005 at the Bellydancers of Color’s first BOCAFest, held at the Holiday Inn in Silver Spring, Maryland (and for those of you who don’t know location --- that would be right outside of Washington, D.C. on the northern most tip of the city, heading for North -- as if you were going to like in New York from D.C.  --- or 6 minutes outside of Washington, D.C.). I am still coming down off of a tremendous high cloud of energy from being around these magnificent ladies.  For those of you who may not have glimpsed them on my ‘Famed” page, here they are….

To really meet these women and begin to be a part of their experience is to wonder, where have you been all your life.  Jessica has been dancing since the late 60’s and Miz Ravenmoon has been expressing yourself shortly thereafter.  Nefertiti has been in the forefront of dancing as well. While we, may have started bellydancing in the last year --- maybe for 5 years, even 10 -- these ladies have blazed a path for our enjoyment from the beginning. Their ages do not matter but it’s their playfulness, their ease of stage presence, the technical and authentic skills that they bring to the dance that has one in amazement.

I had the fun and pleasure of taking Jessica’s class at BOCAFest. I particularly wanted to meet the woman who put out the video, “Jessica Dances.” It was a shame that as I traveled vendor to vendor at Rakkasha East, I could find but one video presenting a “black dancer” and that was Jessica. When I inquired to the vendor, he stated that he knew Jessica and that I would enjoy the video. (And you know my response, right? Then why don’t you have more!!!!) Anyway, Jessica did not disappoint me. From the moment of the workshop presentation title “Shimmy Revisited:  Shaken and Stirred” to her solo performance -- and her dynamic trio performance with the other Divas….WOW!

Since this is my site, I don’t want to get long-winded on this subject.  I must say this though, BOCAFest 2006 is coming next Memorial Day Weekend. I am pretty sure the Divas will be back.  Do not miss them. You will live to regret it!!!! As for me, like the engraved faces at Mt. Rushmore, I now have an image of 3 dynamic superstars at my Mt. Rushmore, The Nubian Divas.
